Congress established TRiO programs to provide educational opportunities for first-generation, low-income, and disabled students, regardless of race or ethnicity, to enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in our nation’s economic and social life.

These programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1964.

TRiO programs aim to help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.

The Math Science Upward Bound program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.
