Adapted Physical Education Overview:

The mission of Adapted Physical Education at MPC is to meet the special physical education needs of students with disabilities. A special adapted physical education curriculum has been developed which is specifically designed to maintain or increase one's physical fitness level through closely monitored aerobic activity, weight conditioning, stretching activities, and body mechanics training.

Be aware that a current exercise referral signed by a physician or authorized health specialist may be required prior to initiating an Adapted PE exercise plan.

Specialized Equipment:

The Adapted Physical Education center includes specialized equipment which is universally designed for individuals who have limited mobility. The equipment includes:

  • Accessible Weight Machines (Equalizer, Uppertone, VersaTrainer)
  • Semi-Recumbent Steppers (NuStep)
  • Monark & Saratoga Arm Ergometers
  • Treadmills (0.l mph to 15 mph)
  • Stationary Bikes
  • Elliptical Walkers
  • Stair Climbers
  • Standing Frames
  • Parallel Bars

Types of courses offered:

ADPE 6 ADAPTED FUNCTIONAL TRAINING
Designed for students with disabilities to apply concepts of functional training in improving their physical capacity.

ADPE 8 INTRODUCTION TO ADAPTED PE
Designed to provide students with disabilities an introduction to the adapted physical education program.

ADPE 9 ADAPTED PERSONAL FITNESS
Provides information and activities designed to increase the physical fitness of students with disabilities.

ADPE 10 ADAPTED WEIGHT TRAINING
Offers weight training exercises and routines for special populations with the goal to develop and maintain muscular tone, strength, and endurance.

ADPE 13 ADAPTED PE
A general entry class designed for persons who are unable to participate in regular PE class.

ADPE 14 ADAPTED AEROBICS 
Designed to provide non-impact creative rhythmic activities for students with disabilities.

ADPE 15 HEART HEALTHY EXERCISE
Designed to provide graded exercise with close monitoring of the heart’s function.

ADPE 16 ADAPTED FLEXIBILITY AND MOVEMENT TECHNIQUES
Designed for students with disabilities, this course covers stretching exercises and movement principles related to flexibility.
