Welcome to Continuing and Professional Education at MPC!

The Continuing and Professional Education (C&PE) program is looking for instructors who have a passion for a subject, skill set, and/or area expertise and enjoy working with community members. In the Continuing and Professional Education program we strive to provide access to innovative and equitable learning opportunities that empower individuals to enrich their lives and enhance their careers. If this has sparked your interest, then we welcome you to submit a class proposal today!

What you need to know and do to offer a class:

Purpose:

  • Statement should speak to the types of courses or events that are designed to provide lifelong learning, enrichment opportunities, and skills training.

    • The program is looking to offer classes in the areas of, but not limited to:

      • Holistic Health and Wellness

      • Nutrition

      • Professional skills training

      • Youth programs

      • Local cultural and history

  • C&PE classes are fee based and do not offer college credits. Students interested in taking a class through the program will pay a fee at the time of registration.

  • Classes are open to the general public. Classes designed for specific age groups (i.e. seniors or youth) will be identified, as not all programming will be appropriate for all age groups.

Class Proposals:

  • Class proposals should be designed with the general population in mind. Classes should be offered in the evenings and/or weekends to accommodate a student’s personal and work commitments.

  • Proposed class fees should be reasonable. The program’s goal is to provide access to equitable learning opportunities. To reduce student barriers, we encourage instructors to propose reasonable class fees. The Office of C&PE will discuss final class fees with the instructor before advertising the class.

  • Class proposals should be designed to be inclusive and welcoming of diverse student perspectives.

  • Submission process:

    • Fill out the

      Course Proposal Form

    • Once the form is complete, submit to continuinged@mpc.edu.

    • The C&PE committee will then review and make a recommendation for Board approval

    • If Board approved, the program director will reach out regarding next steps.

    • If a recommendation is not made, or Board approval not met, the director will reach out to inform you of the decision.

    • If questions arise throughout this process, please contact continuinged@mpc.edu.

Instructor Pay:

  • Instructors are paid 60% of the course fee collected.  The remaining 40% is kept by the District to pay for facility use, publicity, and other related expenses incurred by the District.

  • Instructors are paid once the class has concluded.

  • Prospective instructors interested in compensation for curriculum development should contact the program director, (831) 646-4058.

  • Instructors will be reimbursed for all student material fees.

  • Material fees are paid by each student and are collected at the time of registration. Instructors will invoice the C&PE program for reimbursement of material fees.

Class Fees:

  • The instructor sets the class fee and should take the above payment structure into consideration when establishing the fee.

  • An overall goal of the program is to make it possible for a diverse range of community members to participate.

Facilities:

  • It is preferable to hold classes on the Monterey Peninsula College campuses; however, some classes require a special facility or location other than MPC.

  • The C&PE program will assist instructors in securing facilities.

  • Please note that credit courses receive first priority for use of facilities at MPC.

  • If a classroom is used on one of the MPC campuses, instructors will be responsible for the maintenance of the room and its clean up.

Marketing:

  • C&PE staff will assist with publicizing all classes through one or more of the following channels; printed class schedule, print and digital class flyers, program website, and email marketing initiatives.

  • Instructors are encouraged to promote their class through email and/or social media to people who might be interested.

Class Registration:

  • Students enroll in C&PE classes through Regpack, a stand alone registration system separate from MPC’s admissions process. Students who have questions about registering for a class, should contact the C&PE Office.

  • Students under the age of 18, must have a registration completed by their parent/guardian prior to participation in a class.

  • The C&PE staff will send instructors enrollment rosters prior to the start of class.

  • If a student requests to drop from a class, the instructor shall inform the student to contact the C&PE Office.

Class Evaluation:

  • At the end of each class, students will receive an email with a link to a class evaluation form. Evaluation submissions will be anonymous and the results will be provided to the instructor for the sole purpose of evaluating effectiveness of the class and provide ideas for improvement.

Parking:

  • C&PE students are required to purchase daily campus parking permits.

  • C&PE instructors will receive a temporary parking pass for the dates and times of the class being offered. Permits allow for the parking in student and staff parking lots only.
