Great photography isn’t just about the gear—it’s about the way you see. In this hands-on course, you’ll unlock the secrets of powerful composition and learn how to turn everyday scenes into visually striking images. Whether you're shooting with a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or just your smartphone, you’ll gain the tools to create images that tell a story and grab attention.

Each session dives into key principles of visual storytelling—from balance and leading lines to framing and perspective. Then, we take it outside. Every class includes a photo walk where you’ll put theory into practice, capturing the world through your own creative lens. Afterward, we come together to review and reflect on the work, learning from each other’s unique perspectives.

No matter your skill level, this class will sharpen your eye and elevate your photography.

Step into a modern glassblowing studio and immerse yourself in the timeless art of glassmaking. Over the course of eight weeks, professional artist-instructors willguide you through the fundamentals of this captivating craft, helping you develop the skills and confidence to create your own glass masterpieces.

Class includes 3 hours each week of instruction/shop time with additional 2 hours of private lab time practicing what you've learned. Classes run Thursday nights from 6-9 PM. Lab slots are Monday evenings (6-8 PM) and Saturday mornings (10 AM -12 PM).

In this hands-on course, you’ll learn:

  • Introduction to basic hot shop tools & equipment
  • Safe glassblowing methods
  • Gathering from a furnace
  • Basic shaping and forming of the glass (with tools such as blocks, paper, paddles, jacks, and the marver).
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Neckline

  • Intro to basic shapes and vessels (cylinders, cones, spheres, plates)

Whether you’re brand new to knitting or just need a friendly refresher, this class is the perfect place to start. In our first session, you’ll learn how to cast on and master the basic knit stitch. By week two, we’ll introduce the purl stitch and begin working on a simple, two-satisfying washcloth. In the third session, we’ll finish the washcloths.

In this workshop, students will explore pine needle casting, an organic process where pine needles are soaked and metal is poured directly into them, capturing their distinctive textures and patterns in cast form. Participants will learn how to prepare the material, pour molten metal, and finish their work by drilling and soldering jump rings to create pendants or earrings. This hands-on class is open to beginners and experienced makers interested in combining natural forms with metalsmithing techniques.

The beauty and artistry of handmade chains dates from antiquity, and examples of this exquisite, ancient technique can be seen in the great museums of the world. In this class, we will use a jewelry hammer to flatten thick sterling silver or copper wire into unique “links.” Students will learn how to shape, texture, and connect these links to create beautifully fluid chains that can be worn as necklaces or bracelets. Traditional metalworking techniques such as annealing, filing, and finishing will be explored.

Taking our cue from gorgeous local coastal views, we will use Gelli plates to create colorful monoprint landscapes. If Gelli plates are new to you, no worries!  This class is a good fit for both experienced and new users. Each technique will be demonstrated step-by-step, starting with a single color, then building up to mixing and layering paints and textures. All images are printed on heavy cotton paper, without a printing press, for one of a kind, vibrant paintings.

 Learn to prepare vegan and vegetarian Hosomaki (thin roll) sushi rolls, prepare and season Japanese sushi rice, and make sushi vinegar, as you learn about Edomae style Japanese cuisine, Japan’s original fast food. Near the end of the Edo Era, a sushi chef from Edo (now called Tokyo) came up with the idea of bite-sized pieces of fish atop vinegared rice, which could then be quickly served to passing travelers. Join Zoë in MPC’s professional kitchen and learn to plan and prepare delicious vegetarian entrées, hearty salads, and tasty grab-and-go snacks, and leave with prepped meals for the week!

Recipes will all be vegetarian and emphasize seasonal produce for maximum freshness, flavor, and nutrition. Zoë will guide you through each step as you and your fellow students work together to prepare recipes. Zoë will also offer pointers for shopping, storing, and easy meal prep strategies to simplify your life and enjoy delicious, healthy meals!

After the class, you will leave with your prepped meals for the week in containers, recipes, and the skills to continue easy and healthy meal planning and prep at home.

Get your gloves dirty with MPC's Continuing Education Horticulture classes.  We'll focus on helping you develop practical skills in a fun, supportive environment that you can put to use right away! 

All irrigation systems waste water—but your watering schedule doesn’t have to. In this hands-on workshop, learn how to design an efficient schedule that saves water while improving plant health. You’ll estimate plant water needs, evaluate soil and microclimates, and calculate system efficiency for drip or sprinkler systems. Using this information, you’ll develop a custom schedule that adjusts for seasonal changes. Discussion includes both automated and manual control options using common irrigation controllers.

For additional learning, consider taking “Program Any Irrigation Controller” to apply your schedule.

She has several certifications through the Irrigation Association and currently teaches the semester-long irrigation class at Merritt College in Oakland. Take the mystery out of your irrigation system! Learn how to confidently operate any irrigation controller—setting sprinklers and drip lines to run at the right times, frequencies, and seasonal adjustments. Explore different types of controllers and determine which best fits your landscape needs. This class focuses on programming and managing existing schedules (not designing watering plans).

Completion of “Creating an Almost Perfect Irrigation Schedule” is recommended but not required.

This hands-on course introduces essential gardening practices from seed starting to composting. Students will learn techniques for planting seeds by season, selecting soils and containers, and proper watering for successful germination. Instruction covers efficient watering methods, drought-tolerant plant selection, and mulching techniques to conserve water and improve soil health.

Additional topics include transplanting, plant propagation, and composting with both traditional and vermicomposting methods. Participants will also learn how to create and manage compost systems using household materials and understand the impacts of California State Mandate SB 1383 on organic waste management.

Ever wondered why some plants in your garden thrive while others struggle? This course will help you understand the secrets of successful gardening in a Mediterranean climate. You’ll learn about the five distinct climate zones and how to select plants that do well in our summer-dry, winter-wet conditions. We'll explore why hardy plants, including California Natives from the Central Coast, are perfect for your landscape.

Topics include designing a garden with California’s unique style, choosing drought-tolerant and low-maintenance plants, planning for seasonal color, and selecting plants that are fire-resistant. The Natural History of the Central Coast course is your ticket to discovering the incredible biodiversity, unique ecosystems, and hidden gems of our local landscapes. From misty Monterey pine forests to sun-drenched chaparral, rippling estuaries to rugged shorelines—this course will take you there.

We’ll mix online learning with weekend field trips to some of the most fascinating habitats around. You’ll get hands-on training to become a true field naturalist—learning how to keep a nature journal, use binoculars and field guides, and tap into powerful nature apps like iNaturalist, Seek, eBird, and Merlin.

You’ll also:

  • Learn to identify local plants, trees, birds, and wildlife
  • Understand the forces that shape our landscape—climate, geology, and more
  • Explore the deep-rooted history of the region, including Indigenous perspectives on the land

Instructor Bio: Patrick Furtado, holds a Master of Science degree in Conservation Biology and works as a consulting plant and wildlife biologist. He teaches field naturalist workshops focusing on plants and birds for the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District and leads educational nature walks for Monterey Audubon, Big Sur Land Trust, and the Monterey Bay Chapter of the California Native Plant Society.

Refund & Credit Policy:

The MPC Continuing and Professional Education program reserves the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment. Students in classes that are cancelled by Continuing and Professional Education will be offered a full refund or a credit to their registration account.

Refund Policy for Personal Enrichment Classes:

Refund requests will be honored if they are received at least five (5) business days prior to the beginning of the class. There is a 10% service fee, subject to a $5 minimum. Students requesting to receive a credit will have one year to apply their credit to a future class offering, after which the credit will expire. 

If you find at the last minute you are unable to attend a class, you may send someone in your place by notifying the Continuing & Professional Education office by email or phone, prior to the start of class, who will attend in your place. Please note that all students participating in a Continuing and Professional Education class must be registered.
