Art Classes

Step into a modern glassblowing studio and immerse yourself in the timeless art of glassmaking. Over the course of eight weeks, professional artist-instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of this captivating craft, helping you develop the skills and confidence to create your own glass masterpieces.

Class includes 3 hours each week of instruction/shop time with additional 2 hours of private lab time practicing what you've learned. Classes run Thursday nights from 6p-9p. Lab slots are Monday evenings (6p-8p) and Saturday mornings (10a -12p).

In this hands-on course, you’ll learn:

  • Introduction to basic hot shop tools & equipment
  • Safe glassblowing methods
  • Gathering from a furnace
  • Basic shaping and forming of the glass (with tools such as blocks, paper, paddles, jacks, and the marver).
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Neckline
  • Punty transfer & knock-off/ annealer put-away
  • Intro to basic shapes and vessels (cylinders, cones, spheres, plates)
  • Intro to cold working (flat grinder and punty removal)
  • Intro to color

Whether you’re brand new to knitting or just need a friendly refresher, this class is the perfect place to start. In our first session, you’ll learn how to cast on and master the basic knit stitch. By week two, we’ll introduce the purl stitch and begin working on a simple, satisfying washcloth. In the third session, we’ll finish the washcloth and cast on a cozy scarf project.

With a little practice between classes, you’ll walk away with two handmade pieces—and the confidence to keep going on your own. By the end of the course, you just might find yourself reaching for your knitting needles whenever you need to relax and unwind. (Yes, pun fully intended!)

Ready to go beyond scarves and hats? In this intermediate-level class, we’ll guide you step-by-step through knitting your very own sweater. You’ll build on your existing skills while learning essential techniques like increasing and decreasing, knitting in the round, working short rows, fixing common mistakes, swatching for gauge, and basic blocking.

With a bit of practice between sessions, you’ll complete a baby-sized sweater by the end of the course—perfect for gifting or learning on a smaller scale. And if time allows, we’ll even start a matching hat to round out your set.

Culinary Skills & Cooking Classes

Join us for TGIF: Thank Goodness It’s Food Fridays, a fun and flavorful cooking series that kicks off your weekend with delicious inspiration! Once a month, we'll feature a Friday class that brings joy to your kitchen and make mealtime something to celebrate. Come hungry and leave happy—Fridays just got a whole lot tastier! 

If you love Latin American desserts, this class is for you! Join Chef Yana and learn how to make three delicious treats: flan, tres leches cake, and arroz con leche. These popular desserts, loved in Mexico and around the world, are easier to make than you might think once you know the right techniques!

Chef Yana will show you how to prepare a light, airy tres leches cake soaked in a sweet milk mixture, and teach you the secret to making the smoothest, creamiest caramel flan. You’ll also get to taste these luscious desserts during class and take home a slice of tres leches cake and a slice of dulce de leche flan to enjoy later. ¡Delicioso!

Whether you're going vegetarian all the time or just want to eat less meat (hello, Meatless Mondays!), this workshop is for you! You'll learn how to make healthy, delicious, and easy meals that you can enjoy often. In this class, you'll cook different meals based on themes from various cultures. Working with sourdough starter and dough is a little bit of science, a little bit of magic, and ends with delicious, fragrant loaves of bread. Whether you are a passionate beginner or an advanced baker, this class will provide a wealth of information about making artisan bread using "Levain." You will learn about sourdough starters, wild yeasts, bacterial fermentation, and how to start and maintain natural starters. Chef Amy will discuss how you can refresh the starter, the basic steps for long fermentation, and the use of steam. You will work with dough that has been prepared in advance, and bake some loaves for demonstration.  

By the end of class you will have a better understanding of the theory and practice of making sourdough bread from start to finish, and will take home a loaf of bread and a jar of starter.

Learn to prepare vegan and vegetarian Hosomaki (thin roll) sushi rolls, prepare and season Japanese sushi rice, and make sushi vinegar, as you learn about Edomae style Japanese cuisine, Japan’s original fast food. Near the end of the Edo Era a sushi chef from Edo (now called Tokyo), came up with the idea of bite-size pieces of fish atop vinegared rice, which could then be quickly served to passing travelers. Chef Yana will also demonstrate how to sharpen Japanese knives, and you will have the opportunity to develop your knife skills to cut vegetables. You will take home three sushi rolls, some side dishes (like edamame and pickled veggies), your new Japanese knife skills, and recipes to prepare more delicious Edomae style Japanese cuisine at home!

Learn how to make two classic French tartlets from scratch using fresh, delicious ingredients! In this hands-on class, you’ll prepare two irresistible tartlets: a zesty lemon and Italian meringue tartlet, and a sweet berries and cream tartlet made with fresh, local berries.

You’ll start by mastering the art of making a classic sweet pastry dough, including the proper technique for rolling it out and fitting it perfectly into tiny tart pans. She was an outreach member of the “Rot Squad” teaching composting and vermi-composting in the residential waste diversion program of the Monterey Regional Waste Management District (now ReGen). She has designed public demonstration gardens and serves as the president of the Marina Tree and Garden Club, inspiring the cultivation of useful plants, and working with regional soils and micro-climates. Juli is a graduate of the MPC horticulture program and now teaches HORT 425 - Gardening Techniques, and, HORT 51 and 52, the courses that give students the knowledge base they need to successfully pursue further study in horticulture.

Nature & Wellness

Ready to get outside and dive into the natural wonders of the Central Coast? The Natural History of the Central Coast course is your ticket to discovering the incredible biodiversity, unique ecosystems, and hidden gems of our local landscapes. From misty Monterey pine forests to sun-drenched chaparral, rippling estuaries to rugged shorelines—this course will take you there.

We’ll mix online learning with weekend field trips to some of the most fascinating habitats around. You’ll get hands-on training to become a true field naturalist—learning how to keep a nature journal, use binoculars and field guides, and tap into powerful nature apps like iNaturalist, Seek, eBird, and Merlin.

You’ll also:

  • Learn to identify local plants, trees, birds, and wildlife
  • Understand the forces that shape our landscape—climate, geology, and more
  • Explore the deep-rooted history of the region, including Indigenous perspectives on the land
