Calculating Your Need for Financial Aid

Based on the information you and your family provided on the FAFSA, a financial aid advisor will be able to calculate your financial aid.  You don't have to be low income to qualify, but you do have to demonstrate that your family is unable to pay the full Cost of Attendance (COA).

The Expected Family Contribution (EFC—located on the upper right hand corner of your FAFSA) is the amount of money you and your family are expected to contribute toward your education for a nine-month period, as determined by the Department of Education.  Your EFC is calculated based on the information you provided on your FAFSA.

To make your EFC accurate, report any outside funding, including scholarships, child care, book vouchers, grants, food credit, and funding provided directly by MPC academic departments. Contact Financial Aid to report these outside funding sources.

According to the federal formula, your need is the difference between the Cost of Attendance (COA) and your expected family contribution (EFC).

COA - EFC = Need

This calculation of need determines the amount of funding you may qualify for.

Budgeting - Cost of Attendance

Each year, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office establishes standardized sample budgets that are used to set financial aid allowances for tuition and fees, room and board, textbooks, transportation and personal expenses, and other costs of attending college.

Depending on your individual situation, you may need to make additional adjustments to these Cost of Attendance budgets for items such as child care, disability-related expenses (which are not paid by an outside funding agency), or uninsured medical or dental bills.

To customize the budget and see the amount of grants and scholarships you may be eligible for at MPC, use our Net Price Calculator.
