    Why Do I Need a Course Placement?

    The placement process sets you up for success by recommending courses that match your current skills and knowledge. You must complete the process if you plan to earn a degree; take English, Math, or English as a Second Language classes; and/or waive class prerequisites.

    2 Steps for English and Math Placement

    Step 1 - View Recommendations

    When you Apply to Attend MPC, you provide information about previous academic performance. You’ll automatically be placed into the highest recommended English and Math courses based on any or all of the following criteria: 

    • Previous college-level coursework
    • High school coursework
    • High school grades
    • High school grade point average

    You’ll receive an email with your Math and English placement information within five minutes of submitting your MPC application.

    Step 2 - Take an Online Assessment

    If you’d like to adjust your Math and/or English placement, you can take online assessments that gauge your comfort level with concepts and skills necessary for success.

    Once you complete the online questionnaires, you’ll immediately receive your updated guided placement recommendations. See Guided Online Assessments.

    Challenge Protocols

    If you take the online assessment and believe the adjusted recommendation still doesn’t accurately reflect your knowledge, you can challenge the results. Contact the relevant academic department to request a challenge exam. Exam results are final.

    English as a Second Language (ENSL) - Online Assessment

    If you want to learn English at MPC, you must complete the Guided Placement Tool to receive course recommendations. If you prefer, you can complete the assessment in our office. Contact the Assessment Center to make an appointment.
