A Tour through Civilization, Taught by Expert Faculty
The Gentrain (General Education Train of Courses) Program has been offered at MPC since 1974.
Four faculty members lead the course, with specialties in literature/drama, philosophy/religion, history, and art. Guest lecturers are added for science presentations.
The curriculum is presented in four four-week courses each semester, which can be taken on a credit or non-credit basis. If taken for credit, courses can fulfill general education degree requirements and are transferable to UC and CSU.
Lectures, Readings & Book Club
Lectures on diverse topics are scheduled on alternating Wednesdays throughout each semester and augment the Gentrain curriculum.
In addition, students can join weekly readings and a Gentrain-oriented book club to deepen conversations about classic and contemporary Western literature.
Scholarship Opportunity - Gentrain Society
The Gentrain Society, a volunteer auxiliary of MPC, offers a scholarship in partnership with MPC Financial Aid. Monies are awarded to students over the age of 30, many of whom come back to college to enhance their workplace skills.
The Society organizes cultural outings related to the Gentrain curriculum, publishes a newsletter, and produces the lecture and reading series.
