What the Senate Does
The Academic Senate’s primary function is to make recommendations with respect to academic and professional matters, such as:
- Curriculum, including establishing prerequisites
- Degree & Certificate Requirements
- Grading Policies
- Educational Program Development
- Standards & Policies regarding Student Preparation and Success
- College governance structures, as related to faculty roles
- Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation process
- Policies for faculty professional development activities
- Processes for program review
- Processes for institutional planning and budget development
- Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon
Membership and Committees
The Academic Senate is made up of representatives from MPC’s academic divisions and
disciplines and are elected by colleagues in their respective areas. Senators serve
three-year terms on a staggered schedule, so that one-third of the Senate is elected
each academic year.
Current Senate Membership
Faculty membership in standing, ad hoc, and hiring committees at MPC is overseen by
the Senate’s Committee on Committees. Committee recruitments/replacements are selected
based on specific committee needs and faculty members' interests, expertise, availability,
and diversity.
If you are aware of an open faculty position on a committee or if you would like to
volunteer for a committee, please contact the Committees Chair by email at senateexeccommittee@mpc.edu.
Standing Committees
