Safety Update April 14, 2026

Several active coyotes have been spotted on the Monterey campus in several wooded areas across campus They seem to be congregating now in the ravine near the Administration building, where they may live. Campus Security is aware and monitoring and has been in touch with local authorities if the situation escalates.

For your safety, please follow the below safety guidelines if you see a coyote on campus:

Safety Tips If You Encounter a Coyote

  1. Keep Your Distance: Do not approach the animal and never attempt to feed it.
  2. Do Not Run: Running can trigger a coyote’s hunting instinct. Instead, back away slowly while keeping your eyes on the animal.
  3. Be “Big and Loud”: If the coyote approaches you, stand tall, wave your arms, and shout in a loud, firm voice (this is known as “hazing”).
  4. Protect Pets: If you have any small pets with you, pick them up immediately and monitor your surroundings.

If you see the active coyote on campus, please inform Campus Security at x4099 or mpcsecurity@mpc.edu to alert.
