Program Overview

Passionate about music? College-level study is an opportunity to combine art with intellect. In addition to practicing and performing, students in MPC’s Music program learn to analyze and interpret musical compositions and performances with an awareness of craft, skill, and discipline. Classes in music theory and technique give students a foundation for pursuing a wide variety of upper-level baccalaureate degree programs in music, and a variety of specializations within those programs.

Job Outlook

Musicians who rely solely on their art for their livelihood are rare, but plenty of graduates combine performing and non-performing roles, such as teaching, to build fulfilling musical careers. The greater Bay Area is home to hundreds of organizations, from professional orchestras to record labels to music tech startups, that rely on musically-trained employees. Furthermore, Music graduates build communication, collaboration, and creative thinking skills that are valuable in a wide range of job settings.

Testimonials

De’Ja Jenkins

Not only does the music department have comprehensive classes, it has well respected musicians as faculty. The one on one, hands on training provided to me by the instructors has proven to be invaluable. Without a doubt, MPC prepared me to continue pursuing my music degree at a four year institution and strengthed my skills as a performer.

Jill Wyckoff

The music department at MPC has world class teachers that offer well thought out pedagogy while remaining dedicated and connected to their students. The principles and practices of teaching are both an art and a science, and because of my time studying I have developed the critical skills necessary to continue on my musical journey.

Katie Jones

I am still working towards what I ultimately want to do with a musical career, but the one on one time with a voice teacher at MPC has helped me develop my skills significantly. Through opportunities at the college, I have been able to build my confidence and am now performing regularly both on and off campus at various events and venues.

Zachary Bridges

My MPC Music Department instructors consistently provided me with their guidance, expertise, encouragement, and support throughout my musical journey. I am grateful for their help with preparing me for getting accepted into and attending Berklee College of Music this fall!
