Program Overview

From graphic novels and website animations to logos and printed posters, graphic artists create work that informs, entertains, and persuades. The Graphic Arts program offers courses that develop and enhance technical and perceptual abilities. In addition to foundational coursework in color, design, and composition, students learn digital imaging and illustration software programs and build the vocabulary to communicate successfully with service bureaus, commercial printers, and other professionals.

Job Outlook

Given that almost every kind of media – from books to cartoons – takes shape on computer screens, demand is high for artists trained in the latest digital techniques. Graduates can also apply their skills working on web sites, apps, and software that require artwork and advertising. Further studies in graphic design and user interface/user experience design can build skills, while front-end digital developers combine coding with artistic know-how.

Testimonials

Oscar Gonzalez

I graduated from MPC in 2021. I’m Deaf and have an ability as an artist; I grew up sketching on paper. I was motivated at MPC to select art classes that would help me find a match for my career. The classes I took prepared me to transfer to university for advanced study.

Iza Sarah Ellis

I began my studies in Fine Art and Graphic Design at MPC in the Fall of 1981 after graduating from Monterey High School. Initially, I had not planned to attend college for more than a few semesters. Taking a variety of courses including ceramics, photography, drawing, graphic arts, creative writing, anthropology, and several general education classes gave me the foundation and confidence I needed to transfer with 80 units to California State University, Chico where I earned my BA in Visual Communications in 1986. MPC was a less expensive option and allowed me the flexibility to work while enrolled. My education helped me successfully enter a career in graphic design, advertising and marketing. Having worked for many years in publishing and for advertising agencies, I am currently employed at Blackbaud, Inc as a Principal Program Manager where I manage new software implementations for non-profit customers. MPC was the best choice for me after high school and I am grateful for the quality education I received.
