Program Overview

Chemistry is the study of matter, including its composition, properties, and its potential transformations. Considered “the central science” because it draws from physics and mathematics, chemistry forms the foundation for life sciences, engineering, and medicine. Chemistry students learn about the particle nature of matter and its properties as well as chemical compounds and their reactions. Lab experiments and reporting give students practical experience in a research setting.

Job Outlook

A chemistry degree is the starting point for career paths ranging from medical professions to biotech and high tech materials research to analytical lab work in a variety of industries that include human health, wine making, and water quality, to name just a few. Many students planning to enter medical, dental, or pharmacy school major in chemistry. Those who go on to obtain advanced degrees in chemistry or biochemistry can become educators or researchers.
