Program Overview

Biology is the study of living things, from molecules to entire ecosystems. Biology students receive a strong foundation in key concepts as a framework for future transfer success. In addition, the program addresses the nature of scientific inquiry and builds connections with related disciplines. Hands-on experiences in the laboratory and the field encourage exploration of potential future study and careers, from medicine to biotech to ecology and environmental science.

Job Outlook

Monterey Bay’s marine sanctuary teems with life, so it’s no surprise that the region is a hub of study and conservation efforts, as well as museums and non-profit organizations. Statewide, careers in biology are forecast to grow more than 10% by 2026. Biology is also the foundation for advanced study in health care fields, which represent 10% of all employment in the state. Locally, Monterey County’s four hospitals together form the fourth-largest employment sector in the county, giving Biology graduates a range of options for employment.

Testimonials

Mia Tayler Waters

The MPC Biology program changed my life- not only are the professors passionate about what they do and the courses interesting, but my experiences in this program inspired me to become a biologist- I’m now doing a PhD in Ecology and Evolution! I wouldn’t be here without my start in MPC Biology.
