Program Overview
What is the relationship between individual behavior and society? How do social structures of class, culture, gender, race, and sexuality affect life chances? Through the empirical study of human society, social interaction, and individual behavior, sociology seeks to answer these and other questions. By engaging students’ own experiences and interests, the Sociology program links school and community, offering opportunities to apply new knowledge through student-centered, inquiry based learning, and participatory action research.
Job Outlook
With their research skills and background in social systems, sociology students are well-positioned to pursue a wide range of occupations. Graduates may choose roles that involve working one-on-one with individuals, such as in a wide range of counseling positions, or study broader cultural trends as marketing analysts or policy researchers. Whether in the public, private, or non-profit sectors, most of these fields are experiencing above-average job growth.

Testimonials

After being inspired to pursue Sociology at MPC, I'm now a Sociology major at UC Davis with a minor in Communications. My focus is studying mass media and popular culture. I hope to find an intersection of my work as a photographer and designer with this field of study. I just started an internship as Social Media Manager for a nationwide student-to-student tutoring app called Penji, and I'm able to use my skills in writing and working with people as well as express my skill as an artist.

At the MPC Sociology department I not only learned what sociology was but that I wanted to further study the field and one day become part of the field. I will never forget my first sociology class with Professor Villareal, his excitement, passion and knowledge for sociology was out of this world. But the main thing that I will always take from his classes is that he made the connection from the materials relevant to our student experience. As I move forward in my higher education and professional career I will always take away his pedagogy and that connection professor should strive to make with their students. To me, and others, that is what really makes a difference in our experience at MPC and helps us move forward. I am now one semester away from graduating SJSU with my MA degree in Sociology.

Attending MPC was definitely a decision I will forever be grateful for. The Sociology courses offered at MPC have knowledgeable professors who are truly passionate about teaching Sociology. Due to the smaller classes you get a greater opportunity for engaging in the course and understanding the subject much more in depth. Not to mention, you get to build long term, meaningful relationships such as the one I have built with Professor Villarreal.
Professor Villarreal has been a role model and someone who I look up to for his achievements as a sociologist. I transferred to San Jose State University to obtain my Bachelors in Sociology with a concentration in Social Interactions. The education that I acquire through this degree will help me better understand the community I live in. Also, it will provide me the knowledge I need to succeed in my future career. I hope to work as a social worker with senior citizens, or a counselor for at risk youth.
To students considering the major in Sociology, all I can say is to take a course or two. A single course will spark your interest in the wonderful field of Sociology. Majoring in Sociology will grant you access to numerous careers that are rewarding because you will be helping others out.
