Program Overview

Sticky fingers, laughter, and learning are just the beginning of teachers’ job descriptions. They’re also charged with instilling a love of learning, solid study habits, and social-emotional skills that give children the foundation they need to succeed. Students in the Elementary Teacher Education program learn the history, concepts, and issues related to teaching in today’s diverse schools. Electives in elementary education, bilingual elementary education, and special education give students the opportunity to focus on specialties of interest.

Job Outlook

Elementary school teachers are in high demand and are among the 25 occupations with the most job openings in California. Annually, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD) reports up to 100 openings for classroom teachers. Outside the classroom, program graduates can work in youth organizations, offer school counseling, develop curricula for online learning, and develop education policy.

Testimonials

Ashley Galindo

I originally graduated MPC in 2014 and happily returned to complete a transfer degree in Elementary Education after the introduction of the Teacher Pathway Program. I am currently a Peer Mentor for the Teacher Pathway Program and a Liberal Studies major at CSUMB, on my way to becoming a K - 8 educator in the Monterey Bay area. I feel like the courses I took at MPC greatly prepared me for my current coursework at CSUMB. It was through the required service learning portion of my program at MPC that I gained valuable hands on experience in a K - 5 classroom, which ultimately solidified my choice in career path.
