Program Overview

Medical insurance coding combines healthcare industry savvy with organization and accuracy. The program prepares students for entry-level positions with coursework on procedural and diagnostic coding in a medical office setting. Students learn to correctly identify codes for procedures and diagnoses from physician statements, and positively contribute to the activities of a medical office.  Prior experience in a medical office is beneficial, but not required.

Job Outlook

As the complexity of healthcare and health insurance grows, so does the need for accurate tracking and attribution of medical care costs. Employment openings in the medical records fields are likely to grow “much faster than average” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Given that healthcare is Monterey’s third largest sector, there is an abundance of local opportunities to pursue.
