Program Overview

Spanish is the fastest growing language in California and the second most widely spoken language worldwide. MPC’s program teaches Spanish skills for work, social life, or travel. Courses meet language, general education, and transfer requirements at many four-year universities. Spanish graduates enhance their professions (bilingual lawyers, doctors, journalists, psychologists, etc.)

Job Outlook

Knowledge of Spanish is essential or useful in many occupations, from law enforcement to customer service to agriculture to education.  Positions for translators and interpreters are expected to increase 20% by 2026 in California, which is the largest employer of community interpreters in the U.S. California is also home to nearly 20% of all jobs nationwide requiring fluency in Spanish. Nationwide, the language services industry is the fourth-fastest growing sector overall, and there is also demand from companies seeking to expand globally for a Spanish version of their products, websites, apps, video games, commercials, and more.

When I came from Perú, I had a desire to become a Spanish teacher. The Spanish program at MPC enabled me to achieve my educational and career goals. I was first a student, then a tutor, and now I am part of the Spanish MPC Faculty.

The Spanish for Spanish Speakers courses inspired me to become a Spanish Major. Before that I was really lost. They ignited my passion to be able to drive my education forward. I was the recipient of the $20,000 Karl S. Pister award to transfer to UC Santa Cruz. I received other grants at UC Santa Cruz as well and completed my Spanish B.A. I am pursuing a Spanish M.A. degree.
